Olmix Group presented its algae-based solutions for swine at the recent AASV in San Diego, USA.
Under the title ‘Global knowledge: Individual Application’, the 49th edition of the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians was successfully held in San Diego, USA, from 3-6 March. Hundreds of professionals from the swine industry gathered together for a two-day program that focused on the health challenges that swine veterinarians are facing in the current market.
As one of the participants of the event, not only was Olmix present at the Technical Table tradeshow, but was also represented on stage by Mrs. María Ángeles Rodríguez, Olmix Group’s For Feed Manager, who delivered a scientific lecture.
While giving an overview of the Olmix’s algae valorization processes, which aims to collect, store, refine and valorize algae, Mrs. Rodríguez described the importance of the mucus layer to digestive protection in swine production:

“In the small intestine, the mucus layer acts as the first line of defense against pathogens and toxins present in the lumen. It protects the epithelial cells from dehydration, mechanical damage, and autodigestion, as well as preventing pathogen absorption and system dissemination. The mucus layer also hosts a wide range of innate immune molecules to help further eliminate pathogens. The mucus layer plays an important role on controlling animal and gut health”, she explained.
In a recent study carried out by Olmix Group, results showed that the intestinal mucin production can be increased by the action of specific algae extracts, the MSP®MUCIN, which reinforced the intestinal barrier of piglets, as well as preventing gastrointestinal related health troubles:
“The tested algae extract showed some capacity to induce the expression of both membrane-bound mucins as well as cell-signalling and gel-forming mucins, which are particularly involved in host-protection and control of pathogen dissemination, in both standard and inflammatory conditions. Consequently, the prophylactic use of the MSP®MUCIN should be considered as a method to reinforce the intestinal barrier of piglets and prevent gastrointestinal related health troubles”, she said.
